Barbara Brennan’s Seven Layer Model

Barbara Brennan has popularized a 7 layer model of the energy field, described in her book Hands of Light. The first three layers described by Brennan can be found in Alice A. Bailey’s Esoteric Healing. Beyond these, Bailey refers to “soul energy”, which would be associated with Brennan’s spiritual layers of the field. Below is a summary of Brennan’s description of the layers:

Etheric energy body – close to the physical body (up to 2 inches from the body). An “etheric double” containing all the structures in the body and acting as a blueprint for the physical body.

Emotional energy body – extends out from the body 1-3 inches. The field in which emotional energy flows. Our subjective experience is of feelings and emotions. Observed as bright, intense blobs of color, changing and shifting with changing emotional states.

Mental energy body — extends 3-8 inches out from the body. The field in which mental energy flows. Our corresponding subjective experience is of thoughts in the form of words, sounds or images. Observed as a structured layer formed of yellow lines.

“Astral” energy body — extends 1/2-1 foot from the body and is composed of amorphous blobs of color like the emotional energy body, but infused with the rose light of love.

“Etheric Template” energy body – This forms a template or blueprint for the etheric energy body. It is like a negative with space where the forms of the body would be and density where space would be.

Celestial energy body – extends 2 – 2-/12 feet from the body, composed of beautiful, shimmering opalescent light. Associated with the more “spiritual” emotional states of unconditional love and joy.

Ketheric template — extends 2-1/2 – 3-1/2 feet from the body. Composed of fine threads of golden-silver light structuring a template for the inner energy bodies. Overall shape like an egg.
