Alice A. Bailey – the four mechanisms or energy bodies

Bailey’s description of the four mechanisms or subtle energy bodies is summarized below. Bear in mind that in her description these bodies are in essence one, and that they are also in a state of evolution.
Dense physical body
The physical body is considered to be the instrument of the indwelling spirituality and a part of the life of the planet.
Etheric body
The etheric body vitalizes and energizes the physical body through a web of energy streams, line of force and lines of light. This web is interconnected with a vast network of energies which constitute all of life.
Astral or desire body (sometimes called the emotional body)
The astral body is the result of the interplay of desire and the response of the senses. It is experienced as emotion, pain and pleasure and other pairs of opposites.
Mental body
The mental body involves thoughts and concepts, which Bailey states are difficult to separate out from emotions at this stage in human evolution. In Bailey’s description, the mental body is generally not highly developed at this time in history.
As discussed on our Models page, these mechanisms describe those energies which are related strictly to our lives as human beings. These mechanisms comprise the human being which is seen as an instrument through which the soul expresses itself. Bailey’s books contain discussions of other kinds of energy which impact human life.
